Joint managers Lou Barry and Josh Oldfield were satisfied with Northampton Town’s 0-7 win away to Bugbrooke St Michaels in the Northamptonshire FA Women’s Cup Quarter-Final on Sunday afternoon.
Alex Dicks scored a hat trick bringing her tally to eight in just three games. Leah Cudone netted twice whilst Georgia Tear and debutant Zoe Boote bagged the Cobblers’ other goals.
Speaking after the match, Oldfield said: “The girls called themselves out for not being at the races in the first half.
“The second half was better and we created a lot of chances.
“Winning is the most important thing in the cup, and we’ve done that.”
Eden Brown returned to and captained the side. The defender has shared the armband with Bianca Luttman, Alex Bartlett and Rachael Mumford in recent matches as part of a new ‘leadership group’.
Oldfield added: “We feel that sharing the responsibility amongst a number of players will benefit us and give the players more ownership.
“We pick a captain who we feel will suit each game which is why the captain has changed over the last few games.”
Boote re-signed for the Cobblers from MK Dons on Tuesday and got on the scoresheet in the tie on Sunday.
Barry said: “Zoe has a fantastic amount of experience for someone so young and her ability and standards have raised the level in training.
“She played really well and deserved her goal today, and we’re looking forward to having her on board.”
Boote added: “It’s a great result because we wanted to get to the next round with a clean sheet.
“We weren’t up to our standards, especially in the first half, but we got the goals we needed.
“Lou and Josh have ambitions to get promoted and we’ve got to keep putting in good performances and getting good results to do that.”
Barry and Oldfield’s side return to East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division action next week when they travel to Rotherham United.
The Cobblers won the reverse fixture 9-2 in front of over 600 fans at Sixfields Stadium in September.
Barry said: “We’re getting to the stage where every game is season-defining and we’ve got some difficult away games coming up in the next month-and-a-half.
“Our focus and attention have to be on getting points out of games.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge next week.”
